3 Arsenal players who enter the January transfer window on thin ice

Arsenal probably won’t be too active during the January transfer window. If this is the case, these will likely be players leaving the club.

For the first time in what seems like a lifetime, Arsenal fans can feel happy with their team. The players Mikel Arteta has immediately at his disposal are world class, but below them there are players who deserve to get minutes.

Having a team full of world-class talent is such that there are a growing number of players who are increasingly surplus to requirements, at least for the moment.

Here are some of the Arsenal players who could be further preparing to leave in January…

Tommy Setford

David Raya is one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now, and Mikel Arteta has made it clear that Kepa Arrizabalaga is his preferred backup option.

This leaves little to no room for Tommy Setford to make appearances for the Gunners. He’s only 19, so he doesn’t expect to be close to the starting lineup anytime soon, but even in cup games he’s not considered.

Truth be told, Tommy Setford would benefit from a loan. He is an exciting young goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him. If he can get some minutes under his belt in a lower league, Arsenal can properly gauge where they see him in the team’s depth charts.

Myles Lewis-Skelly

The defense is strange to analyze. Essentially any Arsenal defender can qualify and be good enough. However, overall, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori really made these positions their own.

Calafiori is one of the best defenders in the world right now, and that’s to the detriment of Myles Lewis-Skelly. The Hale End graduate burst onto the scene last year, but he heads into 2026 with no chance of making the starting lineup.

For a player who entered this season hoping to fly to the World Cup at the end of it, his chances are slim. Little is said about this, but it would do him the greatest good to go on loan. It’s not like he can impress Thomas Tuchel at Arsenal without minutes.

Ethan Nwaneri

Ethan Nwaneri recently revealed he doesn’t want to go out on loan and is instead confident he can make Arsenal’s starting line-up. Mikel Arteta would disagree.

Ethan Nwaneri is obviously an incredibly exciting young player, and he seems to have the whole world at his feet. However, he is no match for the starters Arsenal currently have.

A key part of Arsenal’s future, it would do Ethan Nwaneri really good to go on loan.

We understand why he is reluctant to jump ship, for fear of losing his place in the Arsenal team. However, Mikel Arteta’s stance on the matter is quite clear: without Ethan Nwaneri, there is no future for Arsenal. He just can’t be part of the present.
