A January transfer window take that Arsenal fans won’t love

The festivities are well and truly over, but that doesn’t mean the gift giving is over. In fact, in many ways it’s only just begun, as Arsenal turn their attention to the January transfer window.

The January transfer window opened today, and while it’s often not as busy as the summer transfer window, there’s still a certain aura around a transfer window that can’t be matched.

January windows of the past have seen the likes of Leandro Trossard, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nwankwo Kanu arrive. So, there are still opportunities, right?

Well, maybe not so much this year. Any Arsenal fan expecting to see a lot of business this month could be sorely disappointed.

Arsenal fans should prepare for a quiet January transfer window

Arsenal don’t need to sign anyone this month. It’s a nice position, but speaking of the transfer window, it’s boring.

While fans will apply an “it’s a want, not a need” strategy, it’s hard to imagine the club’s decision-makers following suit. Where Arsenal can save a few pennies this month, they are more likely to do just that.

During the previous summer transfer window, Arsenal invested in their team. With the heavily scrutinized centre-forward position, added centre-back depth and even some options on each wing, Arsenal have a near-perfect squad.

I know, I know. Almost Perfect doesn’t win titles. To beat the best, you have to be the best, and with Man City on Arsenal’s neck, that saying rings truer than ever.

However, January was never about building perfect teams. It was always about filling the gaps that had opened up throughout the start of the season.

Strangely, Arsenal have no gaps in the squad. Gabriel Magalhes and Kai Havertz, two long-term injured players, are available again for Arsenal. These days, Arsenal’s injury list is tiny (knock on wood).

And look, not needing to sign is a good thing. Five years ago, this was an urgent need. If you were to ask any Arsenal fan what position they would prefer to be in, they would choose today’s position, not five years ago.

It will probably be a long and tedious month. Fans can see rival clubs getting stronger and feel left out. However, the plan is the plan. These clubs need to strengthen, but not Arsenal. On the contrary, recruiting players and unnecessarily bulking up the team could do more harm than good.

Nonetheless, we’ll see if Mikel Arteta has anything up his sleeve this month.
