Arsenal announce new contract for head coach Renee Slegers

Renee Slegers has signed a new long-term contract as Arsenal head coach.

The 36-year-old’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but Slegers has now signed a contract which commits her future until the summer of 2029.

Slegers initially took charge of Arsenal on an interim basis in October 2024 to replace Jonas Eidevall, before taking the job permanently in January last year after leading the club to an 11-match unbeaten run.

She then was responsible for the club’s superb Champions League success last season, beating Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and OL Lyonnes before facing Barcelona in the final in Lisbon.

“Whether it was playing at the academy or being in the stands watching Arsenal win the Champions League in 2007, or experiencing it with our players, staff and supporters last summer, I am immensely proud to have shared this journey with Arsenal, a club that means so much to me and to so many people,” said Slegers.

“I am delighted to have signed a new contract here, as I believe we have a lot to achieve together – this season and in the years to come.

Arsenal finished second in the Women’s Super League last season, but it has been tougher this season.

Points have been dropped in five of 11 WSL matches so far, leaving Arsenal in third place and nine points off the pace set by Manchester City.

However, Arsenal backed Slegers to allow the club to win major silverware again.

“We are delighted that Renee has signed a new long-term contract with us,” said Clare Wheatley, Director of Women’s Football.

“Since taking over our role, first on an interim basis and then as permanent head coach, Renée has proven herself to be an elite coach with the capabilities to lead us as we continue to challenge for major trophies.

“Together with our supporters, we look forward to continuing our successful journey with Renee in the years to come.”

Arsenal have also appointed Jodie Taylor as women’s technical director.

Taylor had two spells at the club as a player. She retired in 2023 and returned to Arsenal shortly after to take on the role of Head of Technical Services.

“I am extremely proud to take on the role of Technical Director,” said Taylor.

“It’s been ten years since I joined Arsenal as a player, and the progress and growth of the club since then has been remarkable.

“Building on the strong foundations already in place, we want to foster a high-performance environment in which our players, Renee and the entire staff have the right tools and the best possible environment to perform at the highest level.”
