Arsenal are among the clubs hoping to land this Ligue 1 winger

In a recent report, Sport claimed that Arsenal were among the clubs hoping to sign Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana. The Gunners are thought to rival Liverpool and Barcelona in the race to sign the Belgian player next year.

Fofana’s impressive form in Ligue 1

Fofana has sometimes stood out with his performances on the left side of the Lyon attack this season. The Belgian winger wizard has found the back of the net twice and has one assist in 12 matches for the French club during this campaign so far in various competitions.

The 20-year-old has proven himself in the final third as he averages 2.25 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has kept 50% of his attempts on target. Fofana has also been careful in distributing possession in the opposition’s half, based on his 75.1% pass success rate in the French first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract with the French club will expire in the summer of 2028, so it won’t be easy for the Gunners to offer him a cut-price deal next year.

Should Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta take Fofana?

Fofana is a good dribbler with the ball and has an eye for playing some assists on the offensive side of the pitch. He can shoot the ball powerfully from long range and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from the wide areas.

The Belgian sensation is primarily a left winger, but can also operate as a right-back player if asked by his manager. However, some concerns remain over his ability to maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Gunners manage to sign him next year.

Fofana would bring more quality and depth to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s attack. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team place at the north London club.

At 20 years old, the future looks quite promising for Fofana provided he continues to improve each season. Therefore, Arteta should do everything in his power to sign him in January or at the end of this campaign.
