The latest Arsenal news ahead of Sunday’s all-important north London derby

Arsenal have arguably the most important games of the season coming up when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby this weekend with their Premier League lead under threat. The Gunners dropped points for the second game in a row on Wednesday after Wolves equalized in the 94th minute to finish the match 2-2.

The error allowed Manchester City to close the gap at the top to just two points on Saturday night when they face Newcastle United at home. Arsenal only play on Sunday afternoon and if City take all three points they face a must-win derby against Tottenham.

However, Mikel Arteta has urged his side to exploit the “pain” from Wolves’ draw to challenge for the Premier League title. He said: “We have to go through the pain and get through it by looking in the mirror and understanding what the game requires now and the next action is on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta exit prediction made

Alan Shearer has predicted that Arteta will leave Arsenal if they fail to win the Premier League title this season. Despite being top of the pile for most of the 2025/26 campaign, the Gunners have faltered several times in recent weeks and allowed City to overturn the points deficit at the top of the table.

Shearer is still banking on Arsenal to top the table in May, but admits it won’t be easy. Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast, he said: “They’ll probably win it again, just.

“I didn’t expect Arsenal to do things the easy way, I always knew there would be bumps and everything else, nervous moments.

“People are going to throw questions and bombs and you have to overcome that. I expected that to happen. Let’s see what they are made of.

“If he doesn’t win the league, maybe he won’t be at Arsenal. After the chances they had to win it and finishing second, with what they spent on the players they have and the positions they have, they have to win it.”

Regarding the north London derby, Shearer believes the tense match comes at the right time for Arsenal. He added: “I think if you need a game after what happened, it’s not a bad thing to have against your local rivals.

“I know they have a new manager and he is away, but what answer would it be to go and win at Tottenham this weekend.”

Eberechi Eze verdict on Arteta

Eberechi Eze admits he had no fears returning to Arsenal this summer thanks to a helpful chat with Arteta. Discussing his move in an interview with Men in Blazers, the 27-year-old said he is more than aware of his new manager and is looking forward to working under him.

Eze said: “I’ve spoken to him before, so I already knew the type of character he was and that was very cool. So I knew that was the type of conversation I could have.”

Praising Arteta’s character, he added: “He’s an honest guy, he’s straight, he tells it like it is. If I’m honest, I wasn’t too nervous.”

Arsenal will hope Eze gives his best in the title race after scoring just four goals and assisting twice in 21 Premier League appearances since his return.
