Since we were elected to the old first division in 1919/20, we have been a fixture at the top level for a century of campaigns, a performance that no other club in English football history comes close.

Our current driving consists of 4,024 matches on the way into the season opener against Manchester United, where we could win number 1,900 during that time.

It was back in 1904/05 when the club – then known as Woolwich Arsenal – first tried life in England’s top flights and spent seven seasons at that level before suffering the only relegation in our history in 1913 – the same year we moved to Highbury.

After two seasons in division two, football was interrupted due to the outbreak of the First World War. When the game resumed in 1919, the football league was expanded, and we were favored by being chosen to join the first division, where we have left since.

We have had the record for the longest top opportunity since 1983/84, which was our 58th season in a row at that level and exceeded Sunderland’s 57 season from 1891 to 1958.

Five of the six longest top flights are in progress, which see all Premier League-present with Chelsea, which will play a 37th straight season in the top flight this term. Apart from these six, Manchester City is the page with the next longest run – 24 since they were promoted in 2003/04.

By showing how astonishing our performance is, Leicester City has been hit by 12 strokes to the second level during our 100 season, while six other teams have endured that fate on nine occasions.

We have a profit percentage of 47% during our 100 seasons and won the championship on 13 occasions, including at least one of seven different decades.

As for those who have contributed most during that time, no players have appeared in more of our 4,024 matches than David O’Leary, who approaches the 50th anniversary of his debut as early as 1975, with four times title-winning Captain Tony Adams in second place.

And it is no surprise to see Thierry Henry at the top of the tree when it comes to most goals, with 175 of our Talisman’s record excursion of 228 coming in the Premier League. At the same time, no manager took responsibility for more matches than Arsene Wenger’s summary of 828 between 1996 and 2018.

Putting our three-digit performance in additional perspectives, when we look further away, only Inter Milan is on a longer top flight in one of Europe’s five large leagues, a run of 116 years. Noteworthy has the Celtic world record in 129 straight seasons at Scotland’s highest level, while Northern Ireland Trio Cliponville, Glentoran and Linfield have played in 125 straight top levels.

Uruguayan Penarol has reached 122 campaigns, while Flamengo has met 113 in Brazil, with Boca Juniors one behind in Argentina. Ajax has spent 107 seasons at the top level of Dutch football, while Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Club are the only clubs that have never been moved from La Liga since its inception 96 years ago.
