“In the beginning I was on crutches so I couldn’t do much, but when I was on crutches I had someone with me.”

Timber’s mobility and versatility made him an important part of the Premier League’s Meanest Defense last season – just 34 goals sent in 38 games, seven fewer than champion Liverpool.
Gunners will have to be miserable again for the next nine months and Timber admitted: “I did not realize that it had the best record. We know that we defended well and to do well as a unit but we focused on ourselves. We have many good defenders and we defend with the whole team. The amount of defenders we have on the back, the competition is great and it makes it fantastic.”
Arsenal’s first six league matches include dates with United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle – and there is a view that their title challenge will be defined before the end of September.
Timber said: “It’s a tough start, isn’t it? But I think last season we also had a tough start last season and it can go both roads. If you start well it can be fantastic. That’s the challenge. But I think we also have to have that strategy because it is another game that we need to win. It’s the best way to approach it.
“Arsenal has already shown in recent years that we will always fight for the title. And every year they are also trying to strengthen the squad, also this summer. We have a fantastic group and a group to do fantastic things. You can say we are close, this is just the last step.
“There is nothing more you can do than just go for it and fight for it all the way. We have the manager for it, we have the team for it, we have the club for it. That’s the reason everyone is so happy to start again. Give everything because we know we have the chance.
“I think everyone expects a lot of them this season. Chelsea looks fantastic and there are so many good teams, it will be difficult for safe.
“That’s why it’s so important to focus on ourselves and believe in what we can do. We can’t look at too many teams and what’s happening around the league. I don’t think it would be good for us or for anyone.”
