The Gunners were pushed all the way in midweek, needing a penalty shootout to get past Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. However, Arteta has been heavily rotated for this clash, meaning Arsenal should be relatively fresh ahead of this match.

Brighton arrive in north London in struggling form, extending their winless run to four matches after a 0-0 draw against Sunderland at the weekend.

That streak hardly inspires confidence against an Arsenal side who have won seven and drawn one of their eight home Premier League games this season.

Arsenal’s hold on first place did not come without fortune. Last time out against bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers, they needed two own goals, including a spectacular 94th-minute intervention, to secure all three points.

That was followed by another important league win on Saturday night, as the Gunners cruised through a potentially tricky trip to Everton with a narrow 1-0 win and another clean sheet.

The result took Arsenal top of the Premier League at Christmas for the third time in four seasons, something they have only achieved twice in the competition’s first 30 campaigns.

History urges caution, however, with the Gunners finishing second or third on each of the four previous occasions they have led the table at this stage.

Defensively, Arsenal’s early season solidity began to waver slightly.

Injuries to Gabriel, Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera have forced Arteta to deploy a makeshift backline, contributing to the fact they have kept just three clean sheets in their last 10 matches. Even so, they will still rely against a Brighton side also facing fitness and availability issues.

The Seagulls’ struggles in December are becoming a familiar theme.

They are now winless in their last 10 Premier League games played this month, with six draws and four defeats since a 4-2 win over Tottenham in 2023. Only April represents a worst month for Brighton in terms of winning percentage in the Premier League.

This will already be Brighton’s second visit to the Emirates this season, having been beaten 2-0 here by Arsenal in the EFL Cup in October.

With the Gunners’ formidable home record and Brighton’s continued struggles, a similar outcome once again looks likely, with Arsenal well placed to extend their lead at the top.
