Declan Rice is fit to start for Arsenal against Brighton this evening, but William Saliba is out.

The midfielder asked to come off against Chelsea last time out and was assessed after the match, but Arsenal are confident he has avoided any serious problems.

Mikel Arteta made a positive point in his pre-match press conference, with seemingly every chance Rice will be fit to start at the Amex Stadium.

“He was much better today,” Arteta said. “Obviously we haven’t really trained because we only have two days to prepare for the game, so hopefully it will be better tomorrow.”

Doubt hangs more over Martin Odegaard, who has not yet fully recovered from a knee injury that he has been treating in recent weeks.

“We have to wait and see how comfortable he is to perform certain actions,” Arteta said.

Arsenal, however, are without key defender Saliba, who scored the opener in the 2-1 win over Chelsea at the weekend, due to a knock.

Arsenal did, however, include Kai Havertz in the matchday squad.

He returned on Sunday after a hamstring problem against Chelsea, but Arsenal are keen to manage his workload carefully.

“He did part of the session so we will have to wait and see if he is available and in what condition,” Arteta said.

Arteta made no significant changes against Brighton, with the trip to Mansfield on Saturday offering a chance for a rotation.

There is, however, an adjustment to the left. Leandro Trossard’s form dipped and Gabriel Martinelli looked brilliant on the bench against Chelsea, leading the counter that led to Pedro Neto’s red card.
