As Sterling prepares to leave, can Arsenal afford to lose another winger like Trossard or Martinelli?

If Arsenal have learned anything, it’s that their attacking depth is far from sufficient. Not long ago, injuries left them with only Leandro Trossard and Raheem Sterling as fit forwards—a situation that surely reinforced to Mikel Arteta that such a crisis cannot happen again.

To avoid a repeat, two key steps are essential. First, the club must support Arteta in the transfer market by securing top-tier reinforcements—ideally a high-quality striker and a versatile winger. Second, Arsenal must ensure they do not allow key attacking players to leave without bringing in proper replacements.

The departures of Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe, and Folarin Balogun created significant gaps that were never properly addressed. As things stand, Arsenal’s attack is at least two players short. A striker and a winger are necessities, and the club cannot afford further exits without securing adequate replacements.

With Raheem Sterling expected to depart, Arsenal’s new winger signing offers much-needed coverage. The presence of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka, and Ethan Nwaneri suggests their wide options should be well-stocked for the 2025-26 season.

However, according to The Times, the club may still entertain the idea of parting ways with either Martinelli or Trossard—provided they secure a top-tier winger like Nico Williams.

Given how exposed Arsenal’s wings have been in the past—at times even forcing Kieran Tierney to fill in as a makeshift winger—it would be surprising if they entered the 2025-26 season with limited depth in wide areas. If Sterling departs and one of Trossard or Martinelli follows, fans should expect a double winger signing to maintain balance in the squad.

While no team can fully prepare for an injury crisis, Arsenal must learn from past struggles. With their sights set on Premier League glory in 2025-26, they cannot afford to take risks with squad depth. Smart reinforcements and careful planning will be essential to staying competitive throughout the season.
