Atletico Madrid beats Mallorca 3-0 and regains third place in the Spanish championship
MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid regained third place in the Spanish league by beating Mallorca 3-0 on Sunday.
It was the first time in six games this year that Atletico had scored more than one goal.
The victory moved Diego Simeone’s team three points clear of Villarreal, who lost 2-0 to Real Madrid on Saturday. Villarreal remains with the game in hand.

Barcelona, one point behind Real Madrid, will then host Oviedo.
Alexander Sorloth gave the hosts the lead by scoring his fourth goal of the year in the 22nd minute.
Atletico’s second goal was an unfortunate own goal by Osasuna defender David López in the 75th. His teammate Mateu Morey attempted to clear a cross inside the area and his shot hit López in the face and bounced into the net.
Midfielder Thiago Almada sealed Atletico’s second consecutive league win in the 87th.
Mallorca, 16th in the table, have only one win in their last five league games: 3-2 against Athletic Bilbao last weekend. He has three losses and one draw in this streak.
A minute’s silence has been observed before kick-off at all matches this weekend for the victims of two fatal train crashes in Spain this week.
