Inter vs Arsenal Preview
Arsenal arrive in Italy with one goal: to score a point to guarantee automatic qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Mikel Arteta’s side had an excellent UCL group stage.
They are the only undefeated team in the competition, scoring 17 goals, conceding one goal and keeping five clean sheets in six matches. A victory would also mark their longest winning streak in the European Cup/Champions League (7).
Achieving this would certainly help ease the frustration of the weekend, where Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest despite losing title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Yet the landscape is looking good for the Gunners, who hold a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, lead Chelsea into the Carabao Cup semi-finals and are expected to beat League One Wigan in the FA Cup.
The trips to Italy, however, were not kind.
Arsenal’s last away win against an Italian team in the Champions League was in March 2008. Since then, they have failed to win in five consecutive visits (D1 L4) and have failed to score in any of those matches.
Last season’s meeting with Inter also ended in defeat, with Hakan Calhanoglu scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.
Inter Milan, on the other hand, need maximum points to secure a place in the top eight. Sixth with 12 points, the Nerazzurri are in a tight race with several clubs behind them with two matches remaining.
Despite successive defeats in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, Inter arrive in great shape. They have won five of their last six Serie A matches, only dropping points against Napoli, and will need to continue this momentum before a tricky trip to Borussia Dortmund in their final match.
