Bournemouth’s Rose era begins, latest transfer news and more
Football writer Ben McAleer provides your round-up of the latest Premier League stories and transfer news on Thursday 4 June.
Rose begins work at Bournemouth
AFC Bournemouth head coach Marco Rose gave his first in-club interview on Thursday having succeeded Andoni Iraola at the Vitality Stadium. Rose has previously held roles with German trio Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
And it’s clear that Rose is excited to get stuck into life in England’s top tier on the south coast. “The Premier League is the best league in the world,” the 49-year-old told the club’s official channel.
Rose isn’t the only new appointment with the club as he confirmed that Marco Kurth, who he worked with at RB Leipzig, and Frank Geideck, his assistant at both Monchengladbach and Leipzig, will be part of his of backroom staff.
While he didn’t give away much on his style of play, Rose did reveal a little on how he is as a coach. “The best place to be as a coach is not in the office,” he continued. “I love to be on the pitch. I’m an intensive coach, sometimes a little bit over!”

And on the squad itself, Rose said: “You can see that we have a lot of individual quality. We have talented players. Experienced players. We have a great captain [Adam Smith]. Our goalkeeper [Djordje Petrovic] made good progression during the season. You can see that we are still in the process but already on a high level. It’s really exciting to start.”
Rose also reserved praise for predecessor Iraola, who took the club into Europe for the first time after guiding Bournemouth to a sixth-placed finish in his final campaign.
“I admire his work. He did a great job. I know that when he came here, the start was not perfect but the direction he gave the club is really incredible. Top coach, top person. It was a stroke of luck to have him here.”
The secrets to Brentford’s success
Bournemouth weren’t the only side that exceeded expectations in the Premier League last season. Brentford finished ninth in the table and almost qualified for Europe, despite losing numerous key figures last summer.
Head coach Thomas Frank joined Tottenham Hotspur, while Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard moved to Newcastle United, Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively.
Few expected the Bees to soar, yet soar they did. And rather than look to bring in a new manager, Brentford promoted from within as set-piece coach Keith Andrews took over.
“Liverpool had the ‘Boot Room’ for decades and won everything and it’s like, ‘Why has that gone out of fashion?’ Why is it somehow tempting to look at the more glamorous appointment?” the club’s Director of Football, Phil Giles, told The Telegraph.
It’s all about succession planning for the Bees. Wissa and Mbeumo’s respective exits were eased as they already had ready-made replacements in Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade, while the west London side brought in Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.
Thiago went on to score 22 Premier League goals last season and was called up to the Brazil squad for the FIFA World Cup.
On what the future holds for Brentford, Giles said: “It’s now about keeping the team together and maybe adding one or two more to see whether we can get those extra points we missed this year to finish where Bournemouth did, for example [sixth].”
Spurs linked with move for Van Hecke
David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that Spurs are keen on signing Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.
Ornstein added that a Spurs bid for the 25-year-old has been rejected but that talks are continuing. Meanwhile, The Telegraph report that Brighton value the Dutchman at £70million.
The centre-back first moved to England in 2020, but it wasn’t until current Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi took over as Brighton head coach in 2022 that the Dutch defender began to establish himself as a key man for the Seagulls.
Now, Van Hecke is a fully fledged Netherlands international and part of the Oranje setup for the 2026 World Cup.
Van Hecke is a handy distributor having averaged 3.7 accurate long balls per 90 in the Premier League last season, the ninth most of outfield players. His 70.7 passes per 90, meanwhile, ranked seventh.
Anderson attracting Man City interest
The Athletic’s Ornstein has also reported that City’s opening bid for Elliot Anderson has been rejected.
Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move for the Nottingham Forest star, who was one of the Premier League’s best performing midfielders last season.
Anderson ranked top for ball recoveries by outfield players (306) in the 2025/26 campaign and is expected to play a key role for England at this summer’s World Cup.
Ampadu signs new Leeds contract
Ethan Ampadu has put pen to paper on a new Leeds United contract until 2030, according to club owner Paraag Marathe.
The Welshman’s previous deal ran until next year, and he’s been rewarded for his role in the Whites’ impressive season back in the Premier League. Ampadu started 35 times last season as Daniel Farke’s side finished 14th.
“Ethan has signed an extension and we’ve got him locked up for four years,” Marathe said on Thursday. “Ethan was so instrumental for our whole year, and he’s such a captain on and off the pitch.
“We all thought it was such an important first step for this upcoming window,” he added.
And finally, Newcastle offer insight into academy life with Park Seung-soo
Newcastle United gave an insight into how the academy prepares for a matchday on their official YouTube channel on Wednesday. The purpose was to give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the players ready themselves.
And during a one-on-session between Park Seung-soo and coach Robbie Stockdale, the South Korean was praised for his recent improvement in attacking numbers.
“I need more,” was Park’s response, and the desire for improvement won’t have been lost on the club’s coaching staff. “For your ability, [it] should be more,” Stockdale added as he looks to push the 19-year-old on.
