Burnley 0-2 Arsenal: Gyökeres and Rice on target as Gunners go seven points clear
Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points after a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.
Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice both scored in the first half as Mikel Arteta’s side made it nine straight wins in all competitions.
After a cautious opening, it was Arsenal’s stopped threat which once again made the difference. Rice launched a teasing ball to the far post, where Gabriel Magalhães pushed it back in front of goal for Gyökeres to head home into an empty net.
The goal calmed Arsenal down, and they quickly began to dominate and create chances. Gyökeres held the ball brilliantly before putting Bukayo Saka through on goal, but the winger’s weak strike was saved by Martin Dúbravka. Moments later, Saka was denied once more after a clever Arsenal move saw Dúbravka save from Saka again before Leandro Trossard’s curling effort was cleared off the line.
The Gunners finally doubled their advantage before the break with a lightning-fast counter-attack. The ball broke for Gyökeres, who transferred play to Trossard before placing a perfect cross into the box for Rice to head past Dúbravka to make it 2-0.
Burnley improved after the break and nearly pulled one back when Florentino Luís headed in from close range following a free-kick. Marcus Edwards hit the post with a free-kick in injury time, but Arsenal held on to record another clean sheet and victory.
A strong first-half performance from the Gunners was enough for three points today, with their defensive solidity securing a seventh consecutive clean sheet in all competitions. Arteta’s men now turn their attention to Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Slavia Praha before traveling to Sunderland next weekend.
For Burnley, a lively second-half display was not enough to break down Arsenal’s seemingly unbreakable backline. They remain just outside the relegation zone ahead of a huge trip to West Ham next weekend.
