La Liga announced that its scheduled match against Barcelona had been canceled.
There was strong opposition to the match, with silent protests from players during some matches, and Spanish league officials have now decided to cancel the match.
A statement said: “The project was fully compliant with federal regulations and did not undermine the integrity of the competition, as ratified by the competent institutions that ensure compliance, which objected to it due to other circumstances.
“In a context of growing global competitiveness, where leagues like the Premier League or competitions like the Champions League continue to increase their reach and capacity to generate resources, initiatives like this are essential to ensure the sustainability and growth of Spanish football.
“Foregoing these types of opportunities makes it difficult to generate new revenue, limits the ability of clubs to invest and compete, and reduces the international projection of the entire national football ecosystem.”
