It looks like a great story: the former choice n. 9 of the Mavericks Dennis Smith Jr. returns home to Dallas with a one -year contract. Signed one, A story reported for the first time by Shams Charania by Espn. The Maverick need guard depth until Kyrie Irving returns from his tear ACL, so the franchise contacted an old trusted friend.

The reality is less than a fairy tale: this is an unpaid contract. Smith will have to earn a place of roster, which will not be easy because the Maverick already have a complete list of 15 players under contract – Smith will have to beat someone to get that job. The flagship depth graphic designer begins with D’Angelo Russell, followed by Dante EXUM, and for third place there is Brandon Williams, but he does not have a fully guaranteed contract (an $ 200,000 buyout). Another option for the Maverks is to exchange Jaden Hardy to create a roster point. It is something that the Maverick considered before renouncing and lengthening the Olivier-Maxence Prosper contract to bring exum. If the Maverick want to keep Smith and Williams, it’s an option.

Smith is a seven -year -old NBA veteran, but one who was out of the NBA last season. A game for the Maverks and then the Knicks in the early seasons after being enrolled in 2017 by the State of the NC, but its production decreased from there. Smith was a high-level defensive guard and in the 2022-23 season in Charlotte marked on average 8.8 points and 4.8 assists. He played the 2023-24 season in Brooklyn but was not reported and sat off last season.

It has a chance in a place of roster in Dallas, but it will be difficult to earn it.
