CHENNAI, India (AP) — Canada won the toss Tuesday and chose to bat against a New Zealand team eyeing a place in the Super 8s at the T20 World Cup.

Stand-in captain Daryl Mitchell said regular skipper Mitchell Santner is ill and will miss the match because he “ate a bad burger last night”.

Cole McConchie replaced Santner as an equal replacement in the XI.

New Zealand were forced into another change with Kyle Jamieson taking over from hurler Lockie Ferguson, who returned home for the birth of his first child. Ferguson is expected to join the team during the Super 8s.

A third win in Group D would seal New Zealand’s place in the next round alongside South Africa, England, West Indies, India and Sri Lanka. New Zealand started the tournament with wins against Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates before losing to South Africa.

Canada has never played a T20 international against New Zealand. But in the one-day international format, Black Cups have won all three of their previous matches against Canada.

Canada is bottom of the group after losses to the United Arab Emirates and South Africa and will be eliminated from the tournament if they lose to New Zealand.

Later Tuesday, Zimbabwe are aiming for a win over Ireland that would also eliminate 2021 champions Australia in the first round of the tournament for the first time since 2009. Nepal, who have lost all three group matches, are completing their T20 World Cup campaign against Scotland.
