Is Diego Simeone’s defensive empire over? His reaction after Arsenal’s European lesson

Diego Simeone made no secret of his frustration following Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night, admitting his side collapsed defensively after conceding the opening goal early in the 2nd half.

The turning point came in the 47th minute when Declan Rice delivered a perfectly weighted free kick which allowed Gabriel Magalhaes to head home to break the deadlock. From that point on, Arsenal took complete control.

“We managed the first half well until that first goal, but once Arsenal scored they were ruthless for about 13 minutes… it was enough to decide the game,” Simeone told Spanish television after the match.

“Set pieces can change everything”

The Argentine tactician praised Arsenal’s precision in dead ball situations, a strength which has become a key weapon under Mikel Arteta.

“I’ve always loved set pieces, there are a lot of teams that work exceptionally well at them. When you take advantage of it, it changes everything, it opens the way for you,” Simeone said.

He also highlighted the fine margins that defined the first half:

“If Julian Álvarez’s shot, which went a few centimeters away, had gone in, the match could have been completely different. Small details like that change the story,” he said.

The 55-year-old revealed that Arsenal’s collective energy and speed of transfers helped them beat ‘Los Colchoneros’ after a goal down.
