Hawks star Trae Young has reportedly been traded to the Wizards

Trae Young’s time with the Atlanta Hawks is officially over.

The Hawks dealt Young to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. In return, the Hawks will receive CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young is in his eighth season and spent his entire career with the Hawks before being moved.

Announcement

The move comes after ESPN reported on Jan. 5 that Young and his agents were working with the Hawks on a potential trade. The Wizards immediately jumped into the lead as a possible destination.

After playing the first five games of the 2025-26 NBA season, Young missed the next 22 games due to a sprained ACL. The Hawks went 13-10 without him, although he returned in mid-December. The 27-year-old dropped eight points and dished out 10 assists in his first game back, although he has missed several games this month with a right quadriceps contusion.

The change of scenery for Young allows the Hawks to build around the core of Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who are all signed through at least the 2027-28 season.

Young was not extended this offseason and is in the fourth year of a five-year, $215 million contract with the Hawks. He was eligible for a four-year extension, but the deal was not completed in time before he withdrew.

The Hawks last made the playoffs in 2023, when they lost in the first round to the Boston Celtics.
