Antonio Ruediger has commented on the controversy surrounding Julin Alvarez’s penalty in the Champions League match. “It was the referee’s decision, I don’t know what controversy we’re talking about,” he said.

Although almost a month has passed since the match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League, the emotions related to this match have not died down. The most talked about after this clash was Szymon Marciniak’s decision not to count the penalty against Julian Alvarez.

Let us recall that the Argentinean slipped while taking a shot, which resulted in a triple touch of the ball. Marciniak, after a VAR tip, did not count the goal. Ultimately, Atletico lost on penalties (2:4).

Antonio Ruediger thought back to those moments. The German international gave an interview to Qatari television Alkass, which touched on the subject. The defender admitted that he rarely comments on refereeing decisions, but now he decided to make an exception.

– I’m not a big fan of talking about referees and things like that. The referee decided – it was after VAR analysis that he didn’t award a penalty, so I don’t know what the controversy is about – the 32-year-old commented briefly.

Let’s add that it was Ruediger who made the last “eleven” that sealed Real’s advancement to the next phase of the Champions League. In the quarterfinals of this competition, the “Royal” will play Arsenal London.
