The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the Formula 1 season, sealed McLaren’s ninth-ever constructors’ title. After scoring 666 points over the 24 rounds of the calendar, the British team broke a 26-year drought (1998) and secured the team’s title thanks to a solid performance from Lando Norris, who crossed the finish line in first place ahead of the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

The British driver’s victory thus allowed McLaren to add 25 points, to which was added the unit collected by Oscar Piastri who came in tenth place. In the final sum, the Maranello-based team was only 14 points behind the Woking-based team, which won the highest prize among the 10 teams that are part of F1.

McLaren has been crowned Constructors’ champions in 2024, securing a $140m income for 2025 – the highest ever season-high according to Formula One’s funding breakdown. Spain’s Marca said the amount not only largely covers the team’s $135m budget cap (excluding salaries, hospitality, and marketing), but also exceeds the 2023 revenue they earned after finishing fourth in the championship by $27m.

After a close race in recent Grands Prix, Ferrari, which finished second with 652 points, will pocket $131 million, while Red Bull, relegated to third, will receive $122 million, a significant cut of $18 million from the previous year when they claimed the title between the teams.

Fourth place went to Mercedes AMG, which earned $113 million, followed by Aston Martin Racing, which repeats its 5th place in 2023 despite having scored fewer points (104 million). Alpine secured sixth place thanks to Pierre Gasly’s outstanding performances in recent races and earned $95 million, leaving Haas in seventh place with $87 million. The constructors’ table is completed by Red Bull’s satellite team ( Racing Bulls ) in eighth place (78 million), then Williams was in 9th place (69 million) and finally Kick Sauber closed the grid , which will add $60 million for 2025.

Once the race was over at the Yas Marina circuit, Norris did not hide his emotion after McLaren’s historic title. “It’s incredible. Not just for me, but for the whole team. They’ve done an incredible job. I’m very proud. To win after 26 years is very special .” The Briton accumulated 374 points in the tournament and secured the runner-up position in the world championship among drivers behind Max Verstappen, who again dominated the standings and won his fourth consecutive championship (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024).

It is important to remember that the last time McLaren won the title was in 1998, with Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard as drivers and under the direction of Ron Dennis, after beating Ferrari by 23 points. Now, with Norris and Piastri, the team returns to the top of world motorsport after decades of ups and downs in its performance that led it to stop being one of the most relevant teams on the F1 grid.
