Ian Wright concerned with Arsenal ‘problem’ after Brighton win | Football
Ian Wright admits he is concerned about Arsenal’s lack of lead in front of goal following their 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s side maintained their two-point lead at the top of the Premier League after Manchester City sealed a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s kick-off.
Martin Odegaard put Arsenal ahead with an excellent strike in the 14th minute before Georginio Rutter’s own goal doubled their lead. Brighton scored a goal through Diego Gomez before David Raya made a fine save to deny Yankuba Minteh’s curling effort to keep the Gunners in front.
Arsenal had the opportunity to extend their lead even further against Brighton and Wright believes Arteta’s side need to become more ruthless during games.
“I think David Raya probably saved our lives with that incredible save,” Wright told Premier League Productions.
“But it’s a problem that we have right now, for whatever reason, with the chances that we’re getting, we don’t seem to be able to take the risk of being comfortable in the game and then the anxiety kicks in and then it feels like kind of the energy of a basketball game.
“Gabriel Magalhaes will come back, hopefully it will calm us down with the familiarity with him and (William) Saliba.
“But overall we won the game and hopefully we can calm down and start taking those risks because I don’t think we can get away with it too often.”
Arsenal schedule
Aston Villa (H) – Premier League – December 30
Bournemouth (A) – Premier League – January 3
Liverpool (H) – Premier League – January 8
Portsmouth (A) – FA Cup – January 11
Arteta also agreed with Wright’s verdict, insisting Arsenal should have been out of sight before Brighton staged a nervy finish at the Emirates Stadium.
“Very happy with the performance, individual and collective, so dominant. We were a big threat, so very happy with it all,” Arteta said.
“But the margins should have been much higher. I mean, with the number of situations, chances, open chances that we generated throughout the game, it should never be 2-1.
“But it’s the Premier League, this is the step we have to take. I think from their first shot they got the goal and then David has to make another save to keep the result going.
