Reiss Nelson, on loan from Arsenal, has struggled for minutes with Brentford so far this season, with a poorly timed and fairly serious illness disrupting his early momentum by sidelining him for around three weeks.

Nelson impressed on his first start in late October, scoring one goal and assisting another in a League Cup match against Grimsby Town, then he began to get opportunities off the bench in the Premier League.
But those chances dried up in early December, with Nelson ineligible to face parent club Arsenal and then noticeably absent for Brentford’s following match against Spurs.

Brentford boss Keith Andrews has explained that Nelson suffered a slight setback with a knock last week during the Arsenal game. But the good news is that he is now moving closer to a return, with Brentford hosting Leeds United on Sunday.

“Reiss is doing pretty well,” Andrews said. “He had a knock about a week ago, so we’ll see how he prepares for Sunday.
“He should be available for Sunday. We will see how he performs in the coming days.
“There will be opportunities for many players over the coming weeks, given the nature of the matches we are hosting and the Christmas schedule being busy.”

While Nelson has only spent 121 minutes on the pitch for Brentford so far in all competitions, he will certainly be hoping that he gets more opportunities to play in the second half of the season.
