Isak storms Old Trafford and prolongs Manchester United’s ‘Amorim disease
Not even Marcus Rashford’s return after four games out of the squad due to technical reasons changed the fate of Manchester United, which is wandering around the lower part of the Premier League. The defeat against Newcastle (0-2) leaves them 14th with 22 points, seven above the relegation zone and 10 in Europe.
At 4′, the ‘Red Devils’ were already losing. Guimaraes found Hall with a great change of play and the former Chelsea player served a ‘sweet’ that Alexander Isak headed into the goal with the United defense passive. The former Real Sociedad player is ‘on fire’: he has scored in six league games. Only Salah (17) and Haaland (14) have more than his 12 goals in the Premier League.
The 1-0 scoreline, to be honest, did not do justice to the ‘shake-up’ that Newcastle – who had possession percentages close to 70% – were giving United at Old Trafford: Gordon (14′) and Isak (17′) forgave the second.
Joelinton, on the other hand, did not miss in the 19th minute. Guimaraes opened up for Gordon and the Brazilian headed in the six-yard box past Lisandro Martínez.
The rout was in the air… but it never came. Isak saw a great goal disallowed in the 30th minute – he had nailed the ball into the top corner – and Tonali hit the post in the 31st minute.
In fact, United, who took off Zirkzee in the 33rd minute, had two good chances to get back into the game before the break: Hojlund missed a one-on-one in the 34th minute and Casemiro missed another in the 45th minute.
Newcastle, who lost Trippier to injury in the 56th minute, took their foot off the gas, but not even then. Maguire headed against the post in the 59th minute and Hall blocked De Ligt’s subsequent shot.
There is little else to say. The ‘Amorim effect’ is history. United had not conceded so many goals (18) in a single month since 1964. Of course, they had not lost so many Premier League games (5) in a single month since 1962.
