Kathy Burke, Afua Hirsch, and Arsenal FC are backing London Metropolitan University’s new Rising Star scholarship scheme, which will offer full scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Comedian, actor and theatre director Kathy Burke said: “I’m so pleased to be supporting this great project from London Metropolitan University, which is all about turning passion into opportunity for students.

“Breaking into the creative industries, especially TV, is hard for working class people – so a helping hand can make all the difference.

“The scholarship will break down barriers, support new voices and will allow young people to reach their potential.

“Opportunities like this can genuinely change lives, helping students to make the most of their talents and provide a more representative media of the future.”

Seven scholarships will be awarded across courses including leadership in communities, music business, and creative writing and English literature.

The Kathy Burke Rising Star Scholarship will support a student studying film and television studies, while Afua Hirsch’s scholarship will be for a student in journalism, film, and television studies.

Arsenal FC is sponsoring a scholarship in sports leadership as part of its community outreach programme with the university.

Other supporters of the scheme include composer Ayanna Witter-Johnson, poet Dan Whitlam, rapper Jords, and singer Hak Baker.

Hak Baker said: “I’m buzzing to be backing this project from London Met.

“It’s proper important – giving young people from grafting backgrounds a real shot at making it in music, film and telly.

“These scholarships are about getting working class voices through the door.

“This gives young people the space to show the world what they can actually do.

“Talent’s everywhere, it just doesn’t always get seen.

“Backing these kids means a more real, more honest industry – not just the same old faces and stories.”

Successful applicants will have their tuition fees covered for three years and will receive mentoring, networking, and internship opportunities.

To apply, students must submit a personal statement and already hold an offer to study at London Metropolitan University from September 2025.
