It has been 36 years since Manchester United played Arsenal in the first match of the season.

Ferguson made many changes in his squad for the 1989/90 season.
United took on reigning champion Arsenal in the first match of the season, and Ferguson only named three players in his starting line from the previous season.
The returners included Brian McClair, Steve Bruce and Lee Sharpe.
In the second minute, Arsenal was stunned when a United Corner Park led to a main goal from Bruce.
A sanction was awarded after a foul by Tony Adams, although McClair could not add United’s leadership.
Arsenal leveled after 22 minutes when David Rocastle was in the right place at the right time to go home from a dangerous corner park.
United started during the second half and took the lead a second time after 63 minutes when Mark Hughes got its name on the points magazine. New signing of Neil Webb increased the lead before McClair made it 4-1.
It was the best start of the United season could have asked for it, but it was short -lived as Fergie’s page would fail to win in its next four league matches against Crystal Palace, Derby County, Norwich City and Everton.

Hughes was top scorer in the league with 13 goals, although the former United striker scored 15 goals over all competitions.
The highest home team came in the first match of the season against Arsenal when 47,245 packed in Old Trafford.
