Liverpool news: Panel split on Wirtz penalty claim at Arsenal

The Premier League’s key match incidents panel narrowly voted that Liverpool were not wrongly denied a penalty during the match. draw 0-0 has Arsenal earlier this month.

Florian Wirtz went down under a challenge from Leandro Trossard in the 48th minute, but referee Anthony Taylor waved away calls for a spot-kick.

The VAR, John Brooks, chose not to intervene.

It was a split vote for the on-field decision, 3-2, that Taylor was right not to designate the spot. The non-VAR intervention was sustained 4-1.

The panel said: “Wirtz sends the ball away from him and Trossard plants his foot in space in front of the Liverpool striker. The on-field appeal for no penalty was upheld.”

Two panelists felt that “Trossard challenged the man and not the ball” and that the referee should have awarded it.
