Need to know
Marcus Rashford is still looking for a way out of Man United as the deadline for Barcelona to trigger their £26m option to buy moves closer.
Here’s everything you need to know about Marcus Rashford’s transfer situation and his Manchester United future:
- As has been well documented, Barcelona can make his temporary move to the Nou Camp permanent by paying the £26million fee agreed with United when he moved to Spain on loan last summer.
- The deadline for them to activate that clause is June 15, meaning they have little over a week to do so.
- Rashford scored 14 goals and recorded 14 assists in his season on loan in La Liga, but Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to the Nou Camp means a deal for Rashford looks unlikely.
- Rashford admitted after his loan club won La Liga with a victory over Real Madrid in May that he would like to stay at Barca. Read his full quotes here.
- United have always insisted that they would not entertain the suggestion of another loan deal or a lower fee than the £26m agreed with Barcelona, but it’s getting to the point where they may need to soften their stance if they are to move him on this summer.
- However, the World Cup could be a welcome boost in their bid to offload him. If Rashford performs well with England in North America, other potential suitors could come to the table, with Bayern Munich or Arsenal both in the market for a left-winger. Read more here.
- The best-case scenario for United is that they convince Barcelona to pay the £26m before the June 15 deadline. If that doesn’t happen, they need to decide whether to stick or twist. Do they open negotiations with Barca over a reduced fee or another loan deal – should Barca want him back – or do they gamble on him enjoying a good World Cup and attracting interest from elsewhere?
- One thing is for sure: it’s almost impossible to see a way back for him at United, and his £325,000-a-week wages don’t fit into the Ineos structure, so a move needs to be found.
