Miguel Gutierrez, for 8 million: Real Madrid are planning to strengthen their left-back position

A survey by AS reveals that the Canadian is the favourite, but that there is hope for the return of the youth player, who would cost only eight million.

Real Madrid are planning to strengthen their left-back position next summer. They have Mendy, who has extended his contract until 2027 (it has not been announced yet, but it is already a fact), and Fran García, who does not have Ancelotti’s full confidence, although when he plays he always delivers and gives a more offensive profile to that full-back. But Madrid wants a more substantial attacking wing-back and that is why they are aiming to take Alphonso Davies from Bayern. The Canadian is out of contract this summer and would arrive for free; last summer Madrid did not oppose paying some amount to guarantee the signing, but Bayern refused to put an affordable price on it.

So Madrid is counting on the fact that he can arrive for free (and thanks to that, with a good contract) from July 2025. His agent recently made some statements in which he denied that they already have an agreement with any club (“Although the player has many options, we have not reached an agreement with any club. A new contract with Bayern could also be an option. Any information that suggests otherwise is incorrect”), but according to what AS has been able to find out, there is confidence in Madrid that he will accept the white proposal and join Madrid to continue with the lineage of attacking full-backs, as Roberto Carlos or Marcelo did before.

And AS has consulted on this through its WhatsApp channel, in a survey with more than 5,000 responses that has offered an interesting result. To the question “Would you sign Davies?”, 65.2% opted for the option “Yes, he is the best in the world and we need him”. A significant majority, although the second option also obtained a curious result: 22.6% chose to vote “I would bring back Miguel Gutiérrez”. And finally, 12.2% believe that the squad is fine as it is: “No, with Mendy and Fran it is fine”.

Miguel costs only eight million

The conclusion is clear: Real Madrid fans prefer Davies, but if he doesn’t make it to the final (the competition will be fierce, and he will be showered with offers from the Premier League that will probably improve the Whites’ financial situation), the chosen one must be Miguel Gutiérrez, a youth player with a glorious past at Madrid, as he was one of the members of the generation that won the Youth League in 2020.

Since leaving for Girona, he has established himself as one of the best left-backs in La Liga and, in addition, his return would have favorable conditions: he can return for just eight million euros. Madrid sold 50% of his rights (a common practice at the club for years) for five million in 2022, so anyone who wants to sign him (his release clause is 35 million) will have to wait to see whether Madrid exercises its right of first refusal or not.

But Madrid also has a special clause to buy him back for just eight million, just three more than he received (this clause is valid until June 30, 2025; after that, it rises to one million per year). A textbook bargain that would require, of course, the coach’s approval. In his day, Ancelotti gave him minutes with the first team and enjoyed his qualities on the ball, although he was also marked by his defects in defense. The Miguel Gutiérrez who would return, of course, would be a different player, seasoned after three years in the First Division and with participation in the Champions League included.
