CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa made history for U.S. luge on Wednesday, becoming the first American luger ever to lead an Olympic race before the final heat of a competition.

Mueller and Haugsjaa, Olympic first-timers, finished their first heat of the men’s doubles event at the Cortina Games in Milan in 52.482 seconds. This gave them the lead in the second and final heat by a slimmer margin.
