Mueller and Haugsjaa take a slight lead after the first run of the Olympic double luge
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa made history for U.S. luge on Wednesday, becoming the first American luger ever to lead an Olympic race before the final heat of a competition.
Mueller and Haugsjaa, Olympic first-timers, finished their first heat of the men’s doubles event at the Cortina Games in Milan in 52.482 seconds. This gave them the lead in the second and final heat by a slimmer margin.

The time of Austrians Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl in the first run was 52.485 seconds.
Mueller and Haugsjaa won a World Cup competition earlier this season and were the world junior doubles champions in 2024.
The second heat is later Wednesday.
