Revealed: Arsenal Legend Recalls When He Nearly Joined Inter Milan Before Deal Collapsed
Speaking to Sportitalia, via FC Inter 1908 the former centre-back recalled how advanced the negotiations were and praised Inter’s training facilities at the time, describing them in vivid terms.
“I was really, really close to Inter,” Campbell said.
“The training center looked like a Roman garden – it was beautiful, incredible.
“Appiano looked like it came out of the Roman Empire, the most amazing place I have ever seen.”
Campbell explained that the deal never came to fruition, but not for financial reasons.
“It wasn’t a question of money,” he clarified.
“I went to Pinetina, but not long after Ronaldo left Inter. I thought the facilities had to match the quality of the club inside and out – Milan’s methods at that time were more advanced in terms of physical preparation.
“Then Recoba was suspended, Ronaldo was gone, so ultimately it didn’t happen. But yes, I was very close.”

The 50-year-old then reflected fondly on his upcoming transfer, suggesting that Inter have since evolved considerably both structurally and professionally.
Campbell also considered Arsenal’s next Champions League clash against Inter at San Siro on January 20advising his former club to play with courage in a historic setting.
“Arsenal must be brave and take their chances,” he said.
