Mikel ArtetaThe visitors are looking for a sixth successive top-flight triumph on November 8, but will remain in first place. top of the ranking during the international break, it doesn’t matter what happens in game week 11.
Victory for Sunderland could see the Black Cats become Arsenal’s closest challengers, as at least one of Manchester City – a point above – and Liverpool – only ahead on goals scored – will drop points in their Sunday showdown.
Here, Sports Mole examines in depth the results of face-to-face meetings and previous meetings between the two parties.

Thanks to Sunderland’s periods of dominance against Arsenal at various points in the 20th century, this head-to-head is not as one-sided as some might believe, but the Gunners are still more successful with 63 to the Black Cats’ 50 in 154 meetings.
Throughout Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta, this match was unsurprisingly dominated by the north London giants, who have avoided defeat in each of their last 12 games against Sunderland, winning nine and drawing three.
Not since the 2011-12 FA Cup have the Black Cats come out on top in this battle, winning that fifth round tie 2-0 thanks to a Kieran Richardson strike and an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal, avenging a 2-1 Premier League defeat seven days previously.
This latter result was particularly memorable for the traveling Gooners, as Thierry Henri – back in England on a two-month loan – scored the winner for Wenger’s men in the 90th minute.
However, Sunderland had to travel even further afield, in November 2009, for their last league victory against Arsenal, who lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on that occasion thanks to a solitary effort from Darren Bent.
Most recently, Arteta oversaw a 5-1 victory over the Black Cats in the 2021-22 EFL Cup, where Eddie Nketiah scored a hat-trick alongside strikes from Nicolas Pépé and former starlet Charlie Patino.
The Gunners also completed the double against Sunderland in the 2016-17 Premier League season by an aggregate score of 6-1, and their last home defeat against the Black Cats came in their Highbury days – a 3-2 defeat in the League Cup in 2002.
Sunderland, however, had one of the most notable victories of this match, beating Arsenal 2–1 in the semi-final of the 1972-73 FA Cup as a Second Division side, before also shocking Leeds United in the final.
