It was not very beautiful or fluid, but Arsenal’s victory on the opening day at Manchester United thought about what they say in golf – there are no pictures on results cards and no major irrelevance than the detail in how a ball found the hole.

Definitive conclusions based on an hour of football would be Daft in the extreme. But it is also fair to say that this was not close to the kind of Premier League debut that he would have longed for, which is why he lasted only 60 minutes before he lowered.

It would be hard to exclude Riccardo Calafiori in a day when he has received the winner, albeit from less distance than the average school ruler, but his adventure up the wing from left back felt like an accident waiting to happen.
