But the Bulls goalkeeper took a corner kick four minutes later and Eugene Asike was ready to burst off the line to put Hastings 1-0 up.
The Bulls lost centre-back Luke Campbell to injury five minutes before half-time as he tried to stop an attempt by James Stone as the Islanders struggled to deal with the resulting corner.
Bulls boss Elliot Powell made three half-time changes and one of those, James Sunley, made his first serious attempt when his shot was cleared off the line 12 minutes after the restart.
Miguel Carvalho curled a shot onto the home crossbar with 15 minutes left and James Carr forced a fine save soon after, but the island team failed to find a breakthrough.
The defeat keeps the Islanders in mid-table as Hastings moves away from the relegation zone.
