Three blunders and one sending-off: Decimated BVB beats Hoffenheim

TSG coach Pellegrino Matarazzo had no reason to change his team after the 2-0 away win in Köpenick. After all, Hoffenheim had won their fourth treble in a row – but had to accept two forced changes: Kaderabek (adductors) and Weghorst (thigh) were out. Bebou and Grillitsch moved into the starting line-up and initially faced a slightly more grippy guest.

Brooks, Hummels and Baumann are punished

Dortmund got into the game better, gained field advantages and the first good chance. Malen, who was called into the starting line-up by Edin Terzic for Bynoe-Gittens (bench) compared to the 1-0 win against Wolfsburg, failed with his left-footed shot to Baumann (15th). Only three turns of the hand, however, the captain of the hosts was powerless. Brooks was the last man to have the ball stolen, Füllkrug took advantage of the invitation to score the first goal for his new employer (18th).

In the middle of a phase in which Borussia actually had the game under control, there was a momentous blunder by the visitors. Hummels played the ball into the feet of Stach and put the ex-Mainzer – there was a penalty kick (23rd). A very close decision, as the first of two contacts took place in front of the edge of the penalty area. Kramaric didn’t care, the Croatian scored the equaliser (25th).

However, the Kraichgau team did not make more of the affair, which is why Borussia, which wobbled at times, was able to celebrate the second lead shortly before half-time: Baumann clapped a Malen cross in the direction of Reus, who thankfully took it off directly (45.+3).

Prömel and the crossbar prevent the equalizer

After the change of sides, the hosts came out of the dressing room with steam. First, Kramaric played free with a wonderful lifter Prömel, who from a very short distance almost failed miserably by head to Kobel (48th). Shortly afterwards, the Swiss keeper was lucky when Skov’s free-kick hit the crossbar (51st).

Subsequently, Hoffenheim took over the game. The home side dominated, pressed, pushed, but didn’t get any real scoring chances for a long time. Despite over 70 percent possession at times, it should not be really dicey for Kobel’s box – not even after Bensebaini saw first yellow (67th) and then yellow-red (71st) within four minutes.

Ryerson’s feat of strength for the decision

Hoffenheim’s half-chances dominated the picture for a long time before it became really dangerous again – but for Baumann. Adeyemi moved into the middle with a lot of pace and finished from a few yards, the TSG goalkeeper fended off strongly with his foot and kept his team in the game (82nd). However, the colleagues before him did not make anything of it. Instead, Ryerson made an irresistible solo run down the left lane deep in injury time after winning the ball, after which he coolly scored via tunnel to make it 3-1 (90+5).
