Victor Wembanyama opens on the “great experience” in the Temple of Shaolin in China

The images were on all social media: 7’3 “Victor Wembanyama with a shaved head, wearing clothes and running with monks in a temple in Shaolin in Dengfeng, China.
Perhaps the “highest monk” of history, both ancient and modern.
During a private visit to China, the basketball player of San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama razed his head in the Temple of Shaolin in the province of Henan, wore monastic clothes and shared a vegetarian meal, preparing for … pic.twitter.com/afn6bym3dg– China in images (@Tongbingxue) June 9, 2025
Sunday Wembanyama opened the experience at the Fanatics Fest in New York. Quotes through Larry Holder at The Athletic.
“It was a great experience,” said Wembanyama. “My goal was going there was to put my body through the things that is not used to doing and allowing my range of movement and strength. This was probably as different as possible from what I am doing.”
So what did he have?
“Kung Fu. Every day. It was like a vegan temple, monastery … I was isolated,” said Wembanyama,
He added that he had to sneak out and take meat dishes to help him keep the 245 pounds he reached.
This was an informal matter, where he played Wembanyama chess against 100 people lined up (he won) and had a conversation in “The Shop” with Tom Brady, Lebron James and others, during which he discussed his experience in China.
He did not discuss blood clot in his shoulder issue, which prematurely ended last season for him, even if it is expected to be recovered and ready for the start of the training field. The Spurs will have an entire season with him, De’Aron Fox at the point, the debutant Dylan Harper (who should draw up with choice n. 2 next week) and a list that can make some noise in the Western Conference.
