Arsenal: Viktor Gyokeres ‘refuses to turn up at Sporting’ after phone call about transfer | Football | Sport

Viktor Gyokeres has warned Sporting that he will not return to the club for pre-season training in a week’s time as he attempts to force a move to Arsenal, according to reports. The 27-year-old striker is pushing for a Premier League switch amid Sporting’s determination to receive their full valuation this summer.

Gyokeres was widely expected to depart the Portuguese champions without a fuss after two successful years, across which he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances. However, the transfer saga has exploded into a circus in recent weeks, with Sporting president Frederico Varandas publicly disputing reports of an agreed price to let him leave.

Earlier in the summer, Varandas aimed fire at Gyokeres’ agent for spreading the suggestion that the club would accept an offer of £51million plus £9m in add-ons.

Sporting’s demands represent a major hurdle for the prolific Swede’s suitors, including Arsenal and Manchester United.

And with the start of pre-season training on the horizon, the messy situation appears to have come to a fiery head.

According to Record, Gyokeres recently rang Varandas to make it clear that he wants to leave Sporting for Arsenal no matter what.

The No. 9 is said to have emphasised that a £60m package would be worth multiple times the reported £20m they paid Coventry City for his signature in 2023.

It’s claimed Gyokeres also reminded Varandas of how he has given everything for Sporting since his arrival.

The report adds that Gyokeres turned up the heat by insisting that he does not want to and will not return to training while the saga is ongoing.

He views the opportunity to join Arsenal as one that may not arise again, given he is 27 and is essentially committing his prime years to his next club.

Gyokeres reportedly will never forgive those responsible for blocking a transfer if Arsenal cool their interest and opt for an alternative striker.
