Man Utd’s Mainoo voted Player of the Matchweek

A brilliant performance and the winning goal against Liverpool sees midfielder top our fan poll

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been voted Player of the Matchweek for Matchweek 35.

The England international was a key figure in his side’s thrilling victory against Liverpool and scored the winning goal to secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.

Mainoo, who signed a new long-term contract last week to keep him at Man Utd until 2031, has starred since Michael Carrick took over as head coach in January, starting 12 out of 13 matches under the Englishman.

On Sunday, he completed 48 of his 54 passes, won possession back for his side seven times and was successful with both of his take-ons.

It’s the first time that Mainoo has been named Player of the Matchweek, while he is the seventh Man Utd player to claim the accolade this season, after Harry Maguire, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro.

Mainoo picked up 54 per cent of the fan vote for Matchweek 35, while his closest challenger, Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, had 13 per cent. 

The other nominees this week were Jeremy Doku (10 per cent), Bukayo Saka (seven per cent), Conor Gallagher (six per cent), Taiwo Awoniyi (six per cent) and Thierno Barry (four per cent).
