Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes that Phil Foden should be in Manchester City’s starting XI.

Recently Foden has been used as a second-half substitute – and has been left on the bench for three Premier League games this season, after playing a starring role in previous title-winning campaigns.

But the City academy product deserves more, says Rooney.

“Being honest, I think Foden has to play every game for me,” he told The Wayne Rooney Show. “I think you have to put him in the team.

“I love his little movements, how he gets into the pockets of space.

“And it’s not nice watching him sit on the bench. I think he has to play every game.”

Rooney thinks that Pep Guardiola should have taken a different approach to Foden’s patchy form.

“I think he was doing well, he’s had bad moments,” Rooney said.

“But when you have a bad moment and you’re taken out and put on the sidelines for week after week, I just think a player of that quality you have to just keep playing.

“When Kevin De Bruyne went, I was like, ‘put him in there, leave him in there’.

“So yeah, it’s not nice.”
