On Saturday (May 3), we will find out who will win the prestigious Mutua Madrid Open 2025. Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will fight for the title in the Spanish capital.
The current leader of the ranking and the fourth racket of the world reached the grand final of the WTA 1000 competition on clay courts in Madrid. Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff did it by losing one set each. In total, they defeated five opponents each.
Sabalenka will be playing in her fourth career final of the Mutua Madrid Open. In 2021 and 2023, the Belarusian won the title in the Spanish capital. In the 2024 season, Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek proved better than her in the memorable final. If the tennis player from Minsk wins this time, she will equal Petra Kvitova in terms of the number of triumphs in this event.
I am very happy to play in the final again. I hope I can achieve a slightly better result than last year. We had many great matches, very difficult and very close. I will just go out on the court and fight for every point. This is the best preparation you can have for a match with someone like Coco – said Sabalenka (quote from WTA).
Gauff has already achieved her best result in Madrid. She has not been able to get past the 1/8 finals here so far. This time, she advanced to the final, after defeating the defending champion ÅšwiÄ…tek. The American will fight for the second trophy in her career on clay. She enjoyed her first in 2021 in Parma, Italy.
“I’m happy to be in the final of this tournament. I’ve come here five times and I don’t think I’ve ever made it past the fourth round. Aryna is obviously number one in the world, so it’ll be nice to play her in the final and give myself that challenge,” said the US representative.
The winner of the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 tournament will receive 1,000 ranking points and a check for 985 thousand euros. The finalist will receive 650 points and 523 thousand euros in financial bonus. Sabalenka has already defended her points from last year and can further increase the gap over the rest of the field. Gauff, if she wins, will move up to second place in the WTA rankings.
This will be the tenth meeting between the Belarusian and the American in the main series. Gauff has a 5-4 record with Sabalenka on the women’s tour. The women last met in the semifinals of the prestigious WTA Finals 2024 in Riyadh, where the US tennis player won in two sets. On Saturday, Gauff will play for her 10th singles championship (in 2025 she triumphed in the United Cup team championship), while Sabalenka will play for her 20th (this season she was the best in Brisbane and Miami).
Sabalenka and Gauff will face each other at the Manolo Santana Stadium. The match is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. The Sabalenka – Gauff match will be broadcast on Canal+ Sport and Canal Plus Online.
